Voorhes Surpasses 1,000 Digs vs. Lasell

September 19, 2015

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Junior Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) recorded a team high 25 digs against Lasell and surpassed the 1,000 dig mark for her career on Saturday as the Smith College Volleyball Team fell 3-1 to the Lasers and 3-0 to Babson as part of a tri-match hosted by the Pioneers.

Voorhes becomes just the 15th member of the 1,000-dig club in program history and stands 18 digs behind Mikal Minarich for 14th all-time.  She has posted double-digit digs in all but one of Smith's matches this season, and was named Smith Athlete of the Week this past week for her All-Tournament performance at the Smith Invitational on September 11-12.

The match against Lasell was a neck-and-neck affair with two of the four sets decided by the slimmest of margins.  The visitors took the opening set 26-24 and the second set 25-19 before Smith responded with a 27-25 result in the third.  Lasell closed out the match with a 25-16 victory in set four.

Ella Prince (New York, N.Y./Rudolf Steiner) led the Pioneers against Lasell with a career high 11 kills, while Macarena Rojas (Maipu, Santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera) added nine and Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) contributed with eight.

Jenna Rubin (Norfolk, Conn./Suffield Academy) tied her season high with seven blocks (four solo and three assisted), controlling the net at the front of the Smith defense.  Joining Voorhes with double digit digs were Sakura Tamaki (New York, N.Y./Fiorello H. LaGuardia) (14) and Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) (11).

Earlier in the afternoon against New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference-foe Babson, the Beavers pulled away from Smith in straight sets 25-13, 25-12, 25-12.

Smith matched Alicia Wilde and Julia Goldstein of Babson with a match-high five kills, and Rubin recorded four kills on only six swings for a .667 hitting percentage.

Smith and Rojas posted a pair of aces apiece from the service line in both games.  Rojas now has at least two service aces in five of her last six contests, including an eight ace performance last Saturday against Husson.
