Coast Guard Pushes Past Volleyball in Three

Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - In a tightly-contested meeting between New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponents, Coast Guard pushed past the Smith College Volleyball Team 3-0 with game scores of 25-23, 25-19, and 25-20.

The Bears improve to 5-0 at home and 1-2 in NEWMAC play while Smith drops to 0-2 in conference play.,

In a back-and-forth opening set, the teams stood tied 13-13 before Coast Guard ran off four consecutive points to open up a 17-13 advantage., After the Bears pulled within three points of the set at 22-17, Smith picked up five of the next points to pull within one at 23-22., The Pioneers would get no closer as Coast Guard closed out the first by two.

Smith was undeterred and quickly served to a 5-0 lead in the second set before the Bears found their footing and pulled ahead for the first time at 12-11., After a Smith kill pulled the Pioneers to within two at 19-17, Coast Guard scored five of the next points to close out at the second set 25-19.

The Bears were forced to come from behind in the third as well as Smith led midway through the set at 12-10., An extended 11-3 Coast Guard run flipped the advantage to 21-15, and alternating points, the Bears closed out the match 25-20.,

Macarena Rojas (Maipu, Santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera), Jenna Rubin (Norfolk, Conn./Suffield Academy), and Elizabeth Peay (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) each had seven kills to lead Smith while Julie Voorhees, the newest member of the Smith 1,000-digs club, had a match-high 12 digs., Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) led the Pioneers with 21 assists and hit a robust .625 with five kills on eight swings.

Smith returns to the court on Thursday with a trip to Springfield College., The opening serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
