NORTHAMPTON, MA - The Smith College tennis team edged Springfield 5-4 in NEWMAC play Tuesday afternoon on the outdoor courts.

Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) set the tone by singing the national anthem prior to the start of play.  She then paired up with fellow captain, Samantha Peikes (West Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School), to earn the first doubles point for Smith in conference play this season.  Noa Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and Morgan Barney (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) at number 2 doubles and Janan Fugel (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day) and Joanna Kim (Chicago, IL) at third doubles fell to the Pride 8-2 and 8-1 respectively.

Dubin refocused and used her aggressive baseline style at the No. 1 spot to claim victory over Rachel London 6-0, 6-2.  Margaret Anne and Samantha Peikes (West Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School) went on to earn decisive singles wins as well at the 2 and 3 slots.  Janan Fugel (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day) and Morgan Barney (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) bowed to their Springfield opponents in straight sets.  Although Barney was last on the court, the limelight goes to Joanna Kim (Chicago, IL) at No. 6 singles, claiming the match by scores of 6-4, 6-0.

The Pioneers are still alive for a chance to compete in the NEWMAC Tournament and will host Emerson Saturday at 12:00 pm.
