Spirited Defensive Performance Earns 0-0 Draw

September 05, 2015

Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. - A valiant and organized defensive performance by the Smith College Soccer Team preserved a 0-0 draw with homestanding Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) in the first game of the Pioneers' west-coast trip on Friday evening.

In front of a proud group of Los-Angeles-area alumnae, the Pioneers withstood 35 shots from the Athenas, most of them sailing high and wide from distance thanks to the committed back line and back-tackling by the Smith midfielders.

The Athenas nearly pulled ahead minutes into the match as Katelyn Faust sent four shots towards Pioneer goalkeeper Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) in the first four minutes, ringing one apiece flush off the post and crossbar.

But the Pioneers found their feet and Hall comfortably made four saves in each half of regulation before adding the only save in overtime.

Maya McCann (Springfield, Mass./Renaissance) and Innis Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) each logged over 100 minutes outfield for Smith, and Lily Eriksen (Seattle, Wash./Bush School) and Isabella Ayvaz (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) recorded the team's two shots on the night.

With the scoreless result, the Pioneers open the season with consecutive clean sheets for the second time in as many seasons.
Smith returns to the pitch Saturday for a 10 p.m. EST kick-off with Whittier.
