Seventeen Aces Propel Volleyball Versus Norwich

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Xela Miller (Granada Hills, Calif./James Monroe) and Elizabeth Peay (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) each recorded eight kills and Jenna Rubin (Norfolk, Conn./Suffield Academy) added seven aces as the Smith College Volleyball Team defeated Norwich 3-1 on Saturday.
 
The victory came in the second match of opening day for the Pioneers (1-1) after they fell 3-0 to host Western New England.
 
Against the Cadets, the Pioneers jumped ahead with a 25-19 first set before Norwich responded to win the second set 25-23. Smith was dominant over the final two sets to finish 25-12 and 25-11. In the fourth set, the Pioneers recorded 14 kills while hitting .244.
 
Macarena Bustamante (Maipu, santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera) registered five service aces of her own against Norwich to go with 26 assists and 20 digs. Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) (23) and Miller (13) were also in double-figures for digs as the Pioneer defense held Norwich to a -.034 hitting percentage.
 
Beyond her dominant serving, Rubin controlled the net, registering four solo and three assisted blocks.
 
In the first match of the day, the Pioneers opened with the first four points of the afternoon before Western New England rallied to win the set 25-15. The Golden Bears followed with 25-19 and 25-17 set-victories to take the match.
 
Peay finished with seven kills against Western New England to lead Smith while Voorhes led the Pioneers with nine digs.
 
Smith returns to the court on Tuesday when the Pioneers host Simmons College in Ainsworth Gymnasium. The opening serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
