- The Lead: Tthe No. 17 ranked MIT women's tennis team captured the 2016 NEWMAC regular-season championship as the Engineers finished the regular-season with a perfect 8-0 record. This is the fifth straight and eighth time overall that the Engineers have posted an undefeated regular-season record. Joanna Kim (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep) of the Pioneers picked up the only point in singles play for Smith in a default victory.
Smith displayed some great energy starting the match but the double teams of the Engineers were too much to handle.
In the No. 2 slot,
Sam Peikes (West Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School) took on quarterfinalast from the ITA Regionals Lara Rakocevic.Peikes played some well contested points and was able to frustrate the first-year from MIT, ultimately falling 6-0, 6-1.
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) played a long 6-0, 6-0 match which lasted approximately two hours. Although she was unable to bring home a win, she battled for every point until the very end.
Smith's lone point came from the number three position where
Joanna Kim (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep) had the walkover victory when MIT opponent Sharlene Song had to pull out due to injury.
