NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw with Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.Â
Smith is now 7-5-5 on the season and 1-4-3 in conference play. The Blue currently hold a 6-8-1 overall record and 3-4-1 mark in NEWMAC matches.Â
Seniors Kyla Petrie and Maddie Carlborg each scored for the Blue. Petrie found the back of the net 20:53 into the first half, ringing the ball off the crossbar and into the Smith goal to make the score 1-0. Petrie's goal held up until halftime, as the Blue took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Smith found the equalizer in the second half, scoring at 68:08 when junior Jordan Isaacs (Weston, Conn./Weston) scored her seventh goal of the season on an unassisted effort. The Pioneers only had the lead for a short time before Carlborg took it back for the Blue, scoring her team-leading fifth goal of the year at 70:11. Junior Shawna Dunham set-up Carlborg on the play, as the Blue took advantage of a restart following a Smith foul.
Smith senior Emily Smith (Winchester, Mass./Winchester)Â evened the score in the 81st minute, collecting a loose ball in front to score her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Each team got a chance to close regulation but the game went into extra time still tied at 2 apiece. Meredith Roberts (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) had a chance as time expired in the second overtime but her shot was saved by the Wellesley keeper.
Wellesley finished the contest with a 23-17 advantage in shots, while both teams earned six corners.
Alanna Lynch (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) saw her first action of the season today and made 10 saves while Wellesley first year goalkeeper Olivia Reckley made seven stops in a complete game effort.Â
Both teams will continue NEWMAC play on Tuesday, October 25. Smith hosts Mount Holyoke at 3:30 p.m. and Wellesley will be on the road at Coast Guard for a 7:00 p.m. start.Â
Prior to the game, the Pioneers honored their six seniors: Alanna Lynch (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull), Emily Smith (Winchester, Mass./Winchester), Jackie Foody (Weston, Mass./Weston), Maya McCann (Springfield, Mass./Renaissance), Innis Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown), and Sophia Mallari (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) for their commitment and dedication to the soccer program over the last four years.Â
