Hitt Lifts Soccer to OT Win Over Mount Holyoke

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -  Senior forward Innis Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) scored with 3:37 left in the first overtime to lift the Smith College soccer team to a 3-2 win over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Pioneers improve to 8-5-5 on the season and 2-4-3 in the NEWMAC.The Lyons fall to 8-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play.

The Pioneers came out firing in the opening minutes of the half, as Smith held posession and recorded 11 shots in the first 20 minutes. Mount Holyoke's defense stood up to the pressure and turned away anything that came their way.

The Lyons took advantage of their first shot of the afternoon as sophomore Sara Sanaú Ruiz lifted the ball over Smith's keeper for the go ahead goal in the 38th minute.

Fouls by MHC allowed Smith two free kick opportunities late in the opening half but the Pioneer offense was unable to connect.

Just 5:05 into the second half, first year Meredith Roberts (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) snuck a shot past MHC netminder Zoe Marshall that hit the post and rebounded into the net to tie the game. WATCH

Senior Jackie Foody (Weston, Mass./Weston) gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead in the 76th minute on an unassited tally for her fourth goal of the season. WATCH

The Lyons maintained pressure through the closing minutes of the second stanza. A corner from MHC with 1:49 on the clock was cleared by the Pioneers defense to midfield where the visitor goalie Zoe Marshall sent it towards Smith's net. First year McKenna Lamb met the pass and knocked it home to tie the game, sending it to overtime.

In the extra period, Foody sent a cross to the box where Hitt was waiting and blasted a shot passed the diving reach of the opposing keeper. WATCH

Smith held a 29-4 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Alanna Lynch (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) recorded two saves in the victory, while Marshall made 10 stops in the Lyons loss.
