NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Junior goalkeeper
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made 13 saves in a 4-0 loss to No. 8 Bason Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action.
With their seventh consecutive victory, the Beavers move to 12-1 on the season and 5-0 in conference, while the Pioneers slip to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC.
Seniors Victoria Spofford and Staci Swallow, and juniors Jacki Merrigan and Julie Mortimer all scored once for the Beavers. Junior Elise Towers and sophomore Ashley Tango each finished with an assist. Towers, who leads the NEWMAC in scoring, extended her points streak to 13 games.
Spofford opened the scoring less than two minutes into the first half as she collected a rebound off of Tietje's pads for her fifth goal of the season. Mortimer's score came on a penalty stroke with under two minutes left in the game.
Sophomore forward
Alex Larosee (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School) recorded the only shot on goal for the Pioneers.
For the Beavers, first-year goalkeeper Deirdre Barry Draper finished with one, while Tietje was kept busy all afternoon with her season-high 13 stops.
Babson held a commanding 22-4 advantage in shots for the game, while also edging out the Pioneers on the penalty corner by a 7-3 margin.
Smith will take a week off before the Pioneers return to action next Saturday at MIT for a 1:00 p.m. match-up.
