NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College soccer team suffered a 1-0 overtime loss to Emerson College Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
With just their second loss of the season, the Pioneers fall to 7-2-4 on the season and 1-2-2 in conference play. The Lions improve to 7-6 and even their NEWMAC record to 2-2. Emerson now leads the all-time series 2-1-1.
The Pioneers best opportunity of regulation came in the closing seconds as Smith was awarded a free kick down the left sideline approximately 20 yards out. Senior captain
Innis Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown)'s shot sailed over the hands of the Emerson keeper and found the back of the net but time had already expired.
A minute into overtime, first year
Krissy Williams (Stockbridge, Mass./Monument Mountain) had a chance to put the game away but her shot sailed high above the net.
The game-winner came with just 10 seconds on the clock as sophomore Jess Frost took a pass from sophomore Paige Haley and sent it past the hands of Smith goalkeeper
Camryn Biasin (Lee, Mass./Berkshire).
The Lions held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, while Smith was unable to convert on its six corners.
Escobar (4-6) made four saves for her second shutout of the year.
Biasin (3-1-1) made six saves allowing the lone goal. This was just the second goal she has allowed this season in 474:01 minutes of play.
Smith is back in action this Thursday, October 13 at Keene State. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
