Smith College received career-high performances from Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway), Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School), Erin Hanley (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) and Sydney Koh (Seattle, Wash. /Lakeside) as the Pioneers outlasted Westfield State 111-103 in overtime in a non-conference women's basketball game at the Woodward Center on Saturday afternoon.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Castro led Smith with 25 points to go along with four assists and four rebounds.
- Hanley added 23 on 9-of-14 shooting, nine rebounds and four helpers.
- Guest-Pritchett was dominant inside with her third double-double of the season of 24 points and 22 rebounds.
- Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) was a key contributor down the stretch as the junior guard scored 15 and grabbed eight rebounds.
- Sophomore guard Sydney Koh (Seattle, Wash. /Lakeside) came off the bench to finish with 10 points, while senior guard Jade Chihara (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna) totaled 10 points.
WESTFIELD HIGHLIGHTS
- Westfield had five players finish in double-figure scoring led by 20 from senior guard Jill Valley.
- Kierra McCarthy added 17 points and Segarra 16.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pioneers trailed Westfield 71-62 entering the fourth quarter, but Smith scored the first 10 points out of the break to grab the lead 72-71 on a short Erin Hanley (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) jumper with 6:42 to play.
- Smith led 91-86 with 1:27 to play after a Sydney Koh (Seattle, Wash. /Lakeside) three-pointer and 92-88 with 42 seconds left after a Hanley free throw.
- Westfield staged its own rally with a jumper from Valley while surrounded by defenders in the paint to cut the lead to 92-90 with 30 seconds left.
- After Jade Chihara (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna) made 1 of 2 free throws for Smith, Owls center Rebecca Sapouckey hit a three-pointer with seven seconds left that forced the overtime period at 93-all.
- Smith scored the first five points of overtime on a two layups from Guest-Pritchett and a Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) free throw and were able to hold the Owls at arms' length for the rest of the extra stanza.
- Westfield cut the lead to three on a pair of free throws by Kirsy Segarra, with 2:27 left, and cut the lead to four, 107-103 with a Lucy Barrett three-pointer, but Smith made 4 of 6 free throws in the closing seconds to preserve the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
For the game, Smith shot 60.7 percent (37-of-61) from the field (a program record), 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from long distance, and 65.2 percent (30-of-46) from the charity stripe. The Pioneers dominated the boards, outrebounding the Owls 59-41.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Smith's 111 points was the most scored in program history as the two teams combined for 214 points.
- The Pioneers 30 made free throws and 46 attempts were the most in program history and most ever by an Owls' opponent.
- Westfield forced the Pioneers into 44 turnovers (matching the most forced by a Westfield team) and the Owls came away with 23 steals.
- Westfield finished 37-104 from the floor (35.6 percent) and the 104 field goal tries are the second-most in school history.
