First-Half Surge Leads Smith Past Centenary

March 13, 2016

Box Score HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - A 13 goal first-half powered the Smith College lacrosse team to a 17-5 win over Centenary College Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Pioneers improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Cyclones remain winless at 0-3.

Sophomore Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) found the back of the net in the opening minute for Smith, but that was quickly answered by a Cyclone goal from Carlie Schmitt.

It was all Smith the rest of the first period as the Pioneers would go on to score the next 12 goals, taking a 13-1 advantage into halftime.

Both teams played an even second half, scoring four goals apiece.

Hamilton, Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and Ray Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) each registered four goals for Smith, while Emily Biggs (Florence, Mass./Northampton) and Gigi MacDonald (Newton, Mass./Newton Noth) each netted two. Biggs led the visitors with seven ground balls and six caused turnovers. Silveria recorded three assists, while Hamilton and Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) each added two helpers. Silveria is now just four goals away from 100 in her career.

All three goalkeepers on the Smith roster appeared in the game and recorded saves in the win.

Next up for the Pioneers, a contest at Wilkes University on Thursday, March 17.
