Biggs' Hat Trick Paces Smith in Loss at WNE

March 05, 2016

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - First-year Emily Biggs (Florence, Mass./Northampton) recorded a hat trick in her first career lacrosse game, but it was not enough for the Pioneers in a 14-8 non-conference loss to Western New England Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.

With the loss, the Pioneers drop to 0-2, while WNE improves to 2-1 on the season.

First-year Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) put Smith ahead 1-0 when she scored 4:44 into the contest, but the Golden Bears rattled off three straight goals, taking a 3-1 lead at the 15:03 mark.

Biggs responded with her first tally of the game to cut the lead to one (3-2) but Western New England again responded with a 3-0 run on two goals from Brooke Kumnick and one by Tori Cirocco. The home team would go on to outscore Smith 3-2 to end the half, taking a 9-4 lead into the half.

Both teams alternated goals to open the second period followed by a four goal spurt by WNE. The Pioneers closed out the game on goals by Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac), Bogan and senior Ray Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable).

Bogan and Silveria registered two goals apiece, while Harris added one score for the visitors. Biggs and Katie Christensen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) each scooped up five ground balls in the losing effort.

Smith goalkeeper Meredith Britton (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) made eight saves in the loss, while her counterpart Shannon McFadden stopped 10 shots.

The Pioneers return to action Thursday when they travel to Simmons for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
