MIT Powers Past Lacrosse, 20-9

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Smith led by one goal, but MIT put together a 14-0 run that spanned both halves en route to a 20-9 victory over Smith College in NEWMAC women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night. Freshman Cecilia McCormick amassed eight goals for the Engineers (8-3, 3-1 NEWMAC) while freshman Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) (Alexandria, Va.) paced the Pioneers (4-8, 0-4 NEWMAC) with three goals and an assist.

MIT jumped out to a 4-1 lead as sophomore Katie Notarangelo accounted for the first two markers of the night. Smith replied with a 5-1 run which gave it a 6-5 edge at the 16:38 mark.Senior Ray Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) started the rally while Harris scored twice, including the go-ahead goal. After 4:37 elapsed, a strike from senior Kristyn Berretta sparked the Engineers' pivotal run as they entered halftime with a 12-6 advantage.

The scoring spree continued during the first 11 minutes of the second stanza with McCormick capping the run by knocking in a pass from Notarangelo, increasing the advantage to 19-6. Freshman Emily Biggs (Florence, Mass./Northampton) ended the Pioneers' drought with 17:12 on the clock as they posted two of the next three goals to wrap up the game.

Notarangelo finished with seven goals, one assist, seven draw controls, four groundballs, and two caused turnovers. Berretta recorded three goals and an assist while senior Kira Schott posted two goals, eight draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Sophomores Eva Boal and Jacqueline Simmons both collected three groundballs as Boal totaled six saves in net.

Sophomore Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) tallied three goals, four draw controls, and three groundballs while Biggs gathered a team-high four groundballs. Freshman Kathleen Lima (Cheshire, Conn./Northfields Mount Hermon) contributed three groundballs as sophomore goalie Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) (Hudson, Ohio) registered 14 saves for the visitors.

Both squads will host NEWMAC foes on Saturday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m. MIT will take on Mount Holyoke College while Smith will square off with Babson College.
