Strong Second Half Leads Field Hockey Past Connecticut College

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College field hockey team used a three-goal second half en route to a 4-1 non-conference victory over Connecticut College Tuesday evening.

This was Smith's first victory against a NESCAC school since 1998 when the Pioneers last beat the Camels.

With the win, Smith improves to 2-3, while Connecticut College drops to 0-3 on the season.

Mariah Ollive (Milton, Vt./Milton) put the home team on the board first as her shot slipped past the Conn. College goalkeeper for a 1-0 advantage in just the third minute of play.

The Camels evened the score when Jamie Navoni scored unassisted 11:22 into the half.

Nearly 40 minutes of play continued until Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) sprinted past the last line of defense and blasted her shot in the net for a 2-1 Smith lead.

The Pioneers offense continued to click on all cylinders as Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon)'s direct shot from Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) found the back of the cage.

Odhiambo rounded out the scoring for Smith with her second goal of the half on a pass from Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) for the 4-1 final.

Junior goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) recorded 10 saves for the Pioneers.

Smith returns to competition on Saturday when they travel to WPI at 11 a.m. for the first NEWMAC game of the season.
