WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore
Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) assisted on both Smith goals in a 2-1 victory over host WPI
Saturday morning in the NEWMAC field hockey opener for both teams at Alumni Stadium.
The Engineers and Pioneers now sport a 3-3 record on the season.
WPI got on the board first when freshman Carly Cidado collected her own rebound and dished it off to senior Allie Buckley who scored her third goal of the season at
10:33. Nearly
eight minutes later senior
Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) sent home a feed from Bogan following a penalty corner to even the game at 1-1.
Just over six minutes after the intermission junior
Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) poked home a feed from Bogan to give Smith the 2-1 advantage. The Engineers best chance at the equalizer came on a corner with less than 10 minutes to play.
Sophomore Karen Noble totaled three saves and Pioneer junior
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) halted a pair of attempts.
Smith enjoyed an 8-1 margin in penalty corners.
Both teams host non-conference tilts
on Tuesday. WPI entertains Johnson & Wales while Smith takes on Williams, who is receiving votes in the latest NFHCA Coaches Poll, at
