Box Score CASTINE, Maine - The Smith College soccer team fought a to 2-2 draw with Maine Maritime Academy on Friday night in the first game of the 2016 Old Town Canoe Classic on Ritchie Field.
In the first half, the Pioneers outshot the Mariners 8-4 and struck first in the 42nd minute on a goal from Meredith Roberts (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle), following a cross in front of the net from teammate Jordan Isaacs (Weston, Conn./Weston).
The Mariners answered back in the 45th minute when Miranda McIntire found Makayla Lewis in the middle of the field. Lewis broke free from her defender and found the back of the net past Pioneer keeper Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield).
Susana DeFrank broke the tie for the Mariners at 63:53, but the Pioneers tied things up again in the 85th minute on a goal from Emily Smith (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) to send the game into overtime.
Late in the first overtime, Isaacs stole the ball from a Mariner defender and broke open in front of the net, but a smart play from Mariner keeper Maggie McConkey, to close the gap and take away the scoring chance, kept the game tied.
Maine Maritime outshot the Pioneers 4-1 in the final overtime, but neither team broke the tie.
Smith held the overall advantage in shots, 19-12. McConkey ended the evening with six stops for the Mariners, while Hall recorded two saves for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers (0-0-1) will take on Wheelock tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. on Ritchie Field.The Mariners (0-0-1) will return to action on Sunday when they host Wheelock College at 12:00 p.m., for the final game of the Old Town Canoe Classic.
