NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College volleyball team was unable to overcome a strong offensive attack as the Pioneers fell to Coast Guard 3-0 by set scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-13 Tuesday evening in NEWMAC action.
With the win, the Bears improve to 6-4, 2-1 (NEWMAC) while Smith dips to 2-7 and 0-3 in conference play.
Angelou Dunton, Emma Saunders and Susan West each notched a game-high seven kills for the Bears, who hit .362 as a team. Michelle McGill added 10 digs and Makenna Martin dished out 29 assists.
The Pioneers were led by first-year
Kimani Freeman (Newark, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy)'s six kills and
Maca Rojas (Santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera)' 17 helpers. Senior libero
Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) added nine digs.
In the first set the Bears averaged a .269 attack percentage, while they held their opponents to .095. Coast Guard enjoyed their largest lead of the first set, 18-8 on an ace by Makenna Martin en route to the game one victory.
Coast Guard's offensive attack improved in set two as the visitors hit .444. Smith found themselves down 17-11 before the Pioneers' rattled off four straight points to come within 17-15, but the Bears finished out the set claiming the final six points.
A service error by Dunton gave Smith a 4-2 lead in the third set, but the Bears clawed back to take a 15-10 lead. The home team did not give in, trimming the lead to one point (15-14) before Coast Guard closed out the game winning the final 10 points.
The Pioneers return to action on Thursday when they host Springfield College at 7 p.m.
