DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Smith College soccer team remained undefeated after their 1-1 tie with UMass Dartmouth Wednesday evening at Cressy Field.
With the win, the Pioneers are now 5-0-2 on the season, while the Corsairs move to 2-4-1.
After a scoreless first half, Smith got on the board in the 48
th minute of play. First-year
Reilly Sullivan (Keene, N.H./Keene) rifled a shot 20 yards out into the top right corner, which just missed the outstretched fingers junior keeper Becca Field (Brentwood, N.H.)
Early in the second half, Talia D'Ambruoso (Warwick, R.I.) capitalized on a free kick, maneuvering around the Pioneer wall and keeper to the lower right corner from 30 yards out to even the match.
The best opportunity that either side had to win it in regulation came in the 80th minute when Corsair senior Erica Farias
(Tiverton, R.I.) sailed a penalty kick just over the crossbar. UMass Dartmouth put two shots on goal in the overtime periods to Smith's one, but neither team could convert for a clinching score.
Field made three saves in goal for the Corsairs on her second-straight full contest between the pipes on the season while junior
Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) tallied six saves on the evening.
The Corsairs outshot the Pioneers 16-13, and held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-3. D'Ambruoso's goal at 53:05 snapped a 258-minute scoreless streak from the Corsairs offense. At the same time, the goal snapped a 231-minute scoreless streak for the Pioneer keepers, dating back to the opening minutes against Neumann University on Sept. 11.
Smith will resume New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday when they square off with Babson starting at 3
p.m.
