Sierros, Smith Earn Singles Wins in Loss to Mount Holyoke

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College tennis team picked up wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles in a 7-2 loss to Mount Holyoke College Tuesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Lyons move to 5-2 (3-2 NEWMAC), while the Pioneers slip to 1-3 (0-3 NEWMAC).

MHC's top flight pair of sophomore Ayame Yazawa and first year Ching-Ching Huang posted a solid 8-5 win over Smith's duo of sophomores Noa Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and Sam Peikes (West Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School). In the second flight, senior captain Alexa Colas and first-year Catherine Peabody made it a 2-0 lead for the visitors with an 8-3 win against Pioneers' senior Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) and sophomore Joanna Kim (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep).

The action rounded out in the third flight as senior captain Amy Chen and sophomore Clara Wang bested Smith sophomore Janan Fugel (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School) and senior Christine Yee (South San Francisco, Calif./South San Francisco), 8-3.

Singles action saw MHC go up 4-0 as Yazawa posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Dubin at one. Chen helped push the advantage to 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win against senior Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Academy for Information Technology) at six, but the Pioneers grabbed one back as first year Toula Sierros (Northampton, Mass./Williston Northampton) bested MHC sophomore Madison Rosen, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 at five.

Huang helped the Lyons rebound at two, defeating Peikes in a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) battle, while junior Ishita Tiberwal notched MHC's seventh and final point at three with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-2) win over Kim.

The Pioneers rounded out the match with a fourth flight victory as Smith recorded a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) win against Peabody.

Smith is back on the courts next Tuesday, traveling to Springfield for a 5:00 p.m. match. Mount Holyoke returns to action this weekend when it competes at the ITA Northeast Regionals, hosted by MIT.
