Odhiambo Scores as Field Hockey Bests Wheaton, 1-0

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Senior Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) scored in the 52nd minute as the Smith College field hockey team claimed a 1-0 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Wheaton College Saturday afternoon.

Smith is now 4-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Lyons drop to 3-5, 0-2.

The goal was the fifth of the season for Odhiambo and third in the last two meetings against Wheaton. The forward tallied two goals in last season's 7-2 win for the Pioneers.

Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Riley Thompson turned away 16 shots for the Lyons while junior Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made two saves in her first shutout of the season.

The Pioneers had a 28-5 advantage in shots, which included a 17-2 advantage on frame, while Smith had 14 corners compared to five for the visitors.

Smith returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at Simmons at 7:00 p.m.
