NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College soccer team scored a goal in each half to beat Alfred University, 2-0 Sunday afternoon in non-conference action. The Pioneers were joined for starting lineups by members of the Northampton Soccer Club U12 Girls Team.
The Pioneers improve to 6-1-2, their best start dating back to the 1991 season when they began 7-1-1. Alfred drops to 5-3 after the first meeting between these two schools.Â
Senior forward
Jackie Foody (Weston, Mass./Weston) gave the home team a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute of the game. Foody blew past her defender and sent a kick soaring over the opposing goalkeepers head for her second score of the season.Â
Senior forward
Emily Smith (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) pushed the Pioneers' lead to 2-0 in the 49th minute after she one-touched a cross from
Jordan Isaacs (Weston, Conn./Weston) into the back of the net.Â
Smith controlled play for much of the second half, but the Pioneers were unable to find the back of the net as Alfred goalkeeper Sammy Jo Shanahan came up with multiple point blank saves.Â
For the Saxons, Shanahan had an outstanding day in goal tying her career-high with 11 saves. Junior goalkeeper
Camryn Biasin (Lee, Mass./Berkshire) stopped two in the win and improves to 3-0 between the pipes this season.Â
The Pioneers had the dominating advantage in shots, 25-5 and also had the edge in corner kicks 6-2.
Smith returns to the pitch on Wednesday hosting Western New England for a non-conference bout at 4:00pm.Â
