NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Senior forward
Jackie Foody (Weston, Mass./Weston) scored 2:10 in the second overtime period to power the Smith College soccer team to a 2-1 win over Western New England Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.
With the win, the Pioneers improve to 7-1-2, their best start since the 1991 season while WNE drops to 4-6-1. This was just the second meeting between these two schools.
Smith took a 1-0 lead early in the first half as senior
Emily Smith (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) dribbled down the right of the pitch and crossed the ball to junior midfielder
Laurel Reed (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland), who was waiting at the top of the penalty box. Reed ripped a shot to the upper left corner past goalkeeper Marissa Veilleux for her second goal of the season.
Western New England got the equalizer on a beautifully executed free kick situation in the 48th minute. Katelyn Cummings took the free kick and Danielle Dixon headed it past Smith's keeper for her third goal of the season.
Neither team could break the dead lock in the first overtime, but in the second overtime Foody took a pass from Smith and knocked it into the net for the game winner.
Smith held the advantage in shots on goal, 14-8 but WNE had the edge in corners, 4-1.
Junior goalkeeper
Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) made seven saves. Her counterpart Marissa Veilleux stopped 12 shots for the Golden Bears.
The Pioneers are back in action Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Coast Guard.
