NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College volleyball team won the first set but dropped the final three as Daniel Webster claimed a 3-1 non-conference victory Thursday evening in Ainsworth Gymnasium.
The Eagles won by set scores of 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19.
Smith came out strong gaining a 14-10 advantage in the first set. Daniel Webster closed the gap and took a 16-14 lead after an attack error by the Pioneers. Smith rallied at the end of the set to end the match, 25-21.
Both teams remained neck and neck throughout the entirety of the second set but the Eagles pulled out four of the last five points for a 25-20 final.
Another close third set resulted in a a 25-22 win for the Eagles on a kill by Rebecca Hoffman.
In the fourth set, DWC came out hot, getting out to a 5-0 advantage. Kills by
Xela Miller (Grenada Hills, Calif./James Monroe),
Elizabeth Peay (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) and
Ella Prince (New York, N.Y./Rudolf Steiner) helped the Pioneers tie the game at 5-5 and forced a timeout from the visitors. Smith continued their hot streak and tacked on four more points giving them a 9-4 lead. The Pioneers led by as many as eight (18-10) until the Eagles began to mount their comeback. Daniel Webster went on an 11-0 run en route to a 25-19 set four score and the win.
For the visitors, Brooke Marcotte hammered down 10 kills. Hannah Koehler laid down seven service aces to go along with eight kills. Nicole Beard orchestrated the offense with 33 assists and Courtney Warrington contributed 27 digs.
Peay led the Pioneers with 13 kills followed by
Kimani Freeman (Newark, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy)'s 11 and six from Prince. Sophomore setter
Maca Rojas (Santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera) recorded a career-high 31 assists while senior libero
Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) finished with 37 digs.
Smith will travel to Eastern Connecticut Saturday for a tri-match with the host Warriors and Western New England beginning at 2:00 p.m.
