Pioneers Pull Away for 66-51 Win Over Coast Guard

The Smith College basketball team outscored Coast Guard 34-16 in the second half en route to a 66-51 win over the Bears in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon in Ainsworth Gymnasium. With the victory, the Pioneers sweep the season series with the Bears and lead them in the all-time series 22-21.

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore forward Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) recorded her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds (six offensive) and three assists.
  • Senior guard Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway), who shot 3-of-5 from behind-the-arc, totaled 10 points, six boards and two assists.
  • Sophomore guard Erin Hanley (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) led the Pioneers with four assists.

COAST GUARD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Gill Gerton led the Bears with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.
  • Freshman Laura Irish added a career-high 13 points while junior Jill Bray finished with 10 points. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 11-6, the Pioneers scored 10 straight for a 16-11 lead with 2:24 remaining in the first quarter.
  • A three-pointer from Alakai gave Smith a six point advantage, 19-13, at the 1:47 mark but the Bears would claw back to make it a 21-17 score at the end of the first.
  • Back-to-back treys from Irish put Coast Guard ahead 26-25 as the visitors would go into halftime with a 33-32 lead.
  • Despite being down at intermission, the Pioneers took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Bears 17-8. Three-pointers from junior guard Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) and Castro put Smith in front 43-36 at the 6:28 mark of the third.
  • Back-to-back jumpers from Gerton pulled Coast Guard within one, 43-42, but the Pioneers outscored CGA 6-1 in the closing minutes for a 49-43 lead.
  • Stephanie Foukaris (Nicosia, Cyprus/Pascal English School Nicosia)' three-pointer at the 7:07 mark gave the Pioneers a 10 point cushion (57-47) as Smith would hold the Bears scoreless over the final 5:18 for the 66-51 victory.

TURNING POINT
Smith outscored the Bears 17-8 in the third quarter. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
For the game, Smith shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field and 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from long distance while outrebounding the Bears 44-22. Coast Guard shot 44.7 percent (21-for-47) from the field and made just 3-of-11 from behind-the-arc.
