Pioneers Roll Past Bantams, 59-45

Three student-athletes scored in double-figures for the Pioneers as the Smith College basketball team rolled past Trinity College, 59-45, in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Ainsworth Gymnasium.


SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore guard Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) came off the bench to score a season-high 18 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Samantha Alakai (Pukalani, Hawaii/Punahou School) also recorded a season-high 18 points as the junior forward shot 8-of-14 from the floor, while grabbing five boards and recording five steals.
  • Sophomore forward Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) registered her eighth double-double of the season of 12 points, 10 rebounds and added three blocks.
  • Junior guard Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) finished with a team-high four assists.


TRINITY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Bantams were led by Peace Kabari who came off the bench to score nine points along with six rebounds.
  • Kaitlin Lewis added eight points, four rebounds and three assists while Erin Cunningham grabbed a team-high seven boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a fast-paced opening quarter, a jumper from Trinity's Emily Peters gave the Bantams a 16-12 lead, but the Pioneers would close out on a 5-0 run to make it a 17-16 advantage for the home squad.
  • The high-powered offense slowed down in the second stanza as Smith would would outscore their opponent 9-5 to take a 26-21 lead at the half. Guest-Pritchett's jumper at the 1:44 mark gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the first half, 26-19.
  • After a free throw from Kabri to make it 31-25, Smith went on a roll, scoring the next 10 points powered from five points from Alakai.
  • Bondi added five points in a 45 second stretch as the Pioneers lead grew to 18 (50-32) with under a minute left in the third quarter.
  • The game seemed out of reach but Trinity continued to stay on the heels of the Pioneers as their lead was cut to 10 points on two free throws from Emily Peters with 7:20 left in the game.
  • Smith's offense ran dry as they did not record a field goal until Alakai's layup with 5:03 on the clock and their lead at 13 (53-40).
  • Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway)'s layup with 2:52 on the clock put the game officially out of reach as the Pioneers held a 19 point advantage and would go on for the 59-45 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
For the game, Smith shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the field and held the edge on the boards 38-33. Trinity shot just 26.5 percent (12-of-49) from the field and committed 17 turnovers.
