TURNING POINT
Smith outscored the Panthers 17-4 in the second quarter to take a 27-14 lead at the half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Smith held an 8-4 lead with 2:24 remaining in the first quarter thanks to a good free throw from Jade Chihara (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna) but a 6-2 run to close out the opening period saw the two teams tied at 10-10 going into the second.
  • Harrison and Kaufman scored in the opening minutes for the Panthers, but Smith would begin to pull away as the Pioneers would go on a 14-0 stretch to close out the second quarter. During that run, five different players scored for Smith.
  • A trey from Caveney trimmed the lead to 12 (31-19) but Smith maintained composure and answered with an 8-2 run for a 39-21 lead with 4:12 left in the third stanza.
  • Middlebury continued pressure and came as close as 13 (45-32) 1:38 into the fourth, but the Pioneers put the nail in the coffin as the home team ended the game outscoring their opponent 14-6 for the 64-48 final.

For the game, Smith shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) from the field, 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from long distance, and 75.0 percent (15-of-20) from the charity stripe.
