Ollive Nets Game-Winner in 2-1 Victory Over Lasell

Senior midfielder Mariah Ollive (Milton, Vt./Milton)Ā scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 47th minute as the Smith College field hockey team earned a 2-1 non-conference victory over LasellĀ College Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers even out their record at 6-6, while the Lasers drop to 11-3 on the season.

Senior Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook) put the Pioneers ahead 1-0 with 18:07 on the clock on an assist from sophomore Vivian Nelson (Alberta, Canada/Strathcona). Smith would control the pace of play for the rest of the half, taking an 8-0 advantage in shots into the break.Ā 

OlliveĀ doubled the Pioneers lead at the 46:40 mark on an unassisted goal. Erica Connor's scored her fifth goal of the season in the 57th minute to keep the Lasers in the game.Ā 

Each team would have one more corner opportunity but was unable to take advantage.

Smith goalkeeperĀ Cameo TietjeĀ (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa)Ā earned the victory with two stops, while Laser goalie Denise Landry shouldered the loss with 11 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: SMI 1, LASĀ 0 – 18:07: Vivian Nelson (Alberta, Canada/Strathcona) forced a turnover inside the circle and gained control of the ball. Her shot was then tipped in by Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook).
GOAL: SMI 2, LAS 0 - 46:40: Mariah Ollive (Milton, Vt./Milton)Ā took possession at the 25 yard line and carried the ball to the top of the circle where she ripped a shot past the goalkeeper for the 2-0 lead.
GOAL: SMI 2, LAS 1 - 56:08: Lasell'sĀ Erica Connors took a corner insert pass from Claire Shepherd and dribbled it five yards to the right of the cage before blasting the shot into the back of the cage.

GAME NOTES
  • SmithĀ owned a 19-7Ā advantage in shots and 4-3 edge in corners.
  • Mariah Ollive (Milton, Vt./Milton) scored her first goal of the season in tonight's win.Ā 
  • First-year Maura McGowan (Wall, N.J./Wall) made her first career start.Ā 
  • The Pioneers limited the Lasers offense, who averaged 4.5 goals per game,Ā to just one goal.
