Babson College received goals from three different players as the No. 2 ranked Beavers topped Smith College 3-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Pioneers drop to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the NEWMAC, while the Beavers improve to 13-2 on the season and 6-0 in conference play. At halftime, the 1983 Smith College field hockey team was honored prior to their induction to the 2017 Smith Athletics Hall of Fame.

Babson got things going at the 6:29 mark when Catherine Gilman found the back of the net to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. The contest would remain scoreless the rest of the half.

The Beavers used two goals in the second-half from Ashley Tango and Elise Towers to secure the victory and remain undefeated in conference action.

Smith goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa)Ā made 11 saves, while Deirdre Barry stopped three shots in her fifth shutout of the season.Ā 

HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: SMI 0, BAB 1; 6:29 -
Gilman ripped a shot past the Smith keeper in what proved to be the game-winner.
GOAL: SMI 0, BAB 2; 53:21 - Cate Diamond sent it to the stroke mark where an open Ashley Tango lifted the ball into the back of the net.
GOAL: SMI 0, BAB 3; 63:41 - A shot from Babson got through the legs of Tietje and it was a battle on the line between the Smith defense and Elise Towers.

GAME NOTES
  • Babson owned a 16-5 advantage in shots, while also holding a 7-2 edge in corners.
  • This was the fourth ranked opponent Smith has faced this season.
  • The Beavers now lead the all-time series 20-19-1.
  • Babson has outscored the Pioneers 11-0 over the last three meetings.
