Two goals in the first-half proved to be enough as the Babson College soccer team earned a road win over Smith College Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Pioneers drop to 5-8 overall and 1-6 in NEWMAC action, while Babson improve to 6-6-2 overall with its third straight win and 3-1-2 mark in conference play.

A foul in the box from the Smith defense gave the Beavers a penalty kick opportunity at the 7:08 mark. Jessica Fernandes stepped up and converted the opportunity to go up 1-0. The Beavers doubled their lead in the 27th minute on a header from Colleen Beggan.

The Pioneers cut the lead in half when Kelly McKenna (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) took a pass from Reilly Sullivan (Keene, N.H./Keene) and slipped it past the Babson keeper.

Senior goalkeeper Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) made six saves for the Pioneers. Maddison Gierschick stopped four saves in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: SMI 0, BAB 1; 21:52 -  Jessica Fernandes placed her penalty kick to the lower right side of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
GOAL: SMI 0, BAB 2; 67:03 - Scarlet Broderick took Babson's corner and found Colleen Beggan whose header went over the outreached arms of the Smith goalkeeper.
GOAL: SMI 1, BAB 2; 69:54 - Reilly Sullivan (Keene, N.H./Keene) sent a ball 25 yards out on the right side to the foot of Kelly McKenna (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) who slipped it into the left side of the cage.

GAME NOTES

• Babson held the 11-7 advantage in shots and 4-3 edge in corners.
• The all-time series is now tied 19-19-2.
• McKenna's goal was the third of her career.
