Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and
Bryn Murray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) netted second half goals as Smith rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat host WPI 2-1 in a NEWMAC field hockey contest played Tuesday evening.Â
With the win, the Pioneers even their records at 7-7 on the season and 3-3 in conference action while the Engineers dip to 8-4 overall and 3-3 in NEWMAC play.Â
It was WPI that dented the scoring column first when Paris Lopez successfully converted a penalty stroke 2:10 into the contest for first career goal. WPI attempted the first three shots of the night before Smith tallied the next two by Alex Larosee (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School) and Hamilton which were saved by Engineer goalkeeper Karen Mushrall and forced the Crimson and Gray to call timeout. Over the opening half WPI held a narrow 5-4 edge in shots and were awarded all three of the stanza's penalty corners.Â
Smith came out of the locker room strong in the second half and tied the game at 42:11 when Hamilton batted in a shot towards the goal by Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook). Nearly 10 minutes later the Pioneers were award a penalty stroke of their own and Murray tucked one in just past a stretched out Mushrall for the game-winner.
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made three stops in a winning effort, while Mushrall was strong in net for the Engineers, repelling seven shots.

GOAL: SMI 2, WPI 1; 52:04 - Bryn Murray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) buried her penalty stroke attempt for her first goal of the season.
GAME NOTES
- Smith owned a 13-9 advantage in shots, while the Engineers earned six corners compared to four for the Pioneers.
- The all-time series now stands at 22-19 in favor of WPI.
- First-year Bryn Murray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) scored her first collegiate goal in tonight's contest.
