Smith Secures NEWMAC Playoff Spot with 2-0 Win Over Mount Holyoke

Mount Holyoke College at Smith College
October 19, 2017
Northampton, Mass.

Records: Smith 7-8; Amherst 9-4

The Smith College field hockey team secured a berth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) playoffs for the third consecutive season with their 2-0 win over Mount Holyoke Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Pioneers move to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the NEWMAC, while the Lyons slip to 10-5 and 4-3 in conference action. Prior to the game, Smith honored their six seniors: Sophie Chase (Milton, Mass./Milton), Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy), Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook), Mariah Ollive (Milton, Vt./Milton), Molly Peek (South Orange, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy), and Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa).

The Lyons went on the attack early, taking two shots on goal and earning a penalty corner in the opening minutes of the game. Junior forward Alex Larosee (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School) had a great opportunity to put the Pioneers ahead but Lia Messersmith made the defensive save for the Lyons.

Smith took advantage of their second corner of the game as sophomore Sammie Pavlov (Royersford, Pa./Westtown School) put the home team up 1-0 at the 16:23 mark on a pass from Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon).

Mount Holyoke continued to pressure the Smith defense late in the second half but Tietje made a number of key saves and Chaudoin recorded a defensive stop.

The Pioneers had three corner opportunities to open the second stanza but Mount Holyoke's defense thwarted out any threats. Larosee doubled Smith's lead in the 51st minute when she connected with Chaudoin.

In the closing minutes of the game, MHC earned a trio of corners, but Smith's defense was up to the task.

Smith goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) earned the win for the Pioneers with six saves, while Chaudoin added two defensive stops. Morgan Turner made 10 stops for the Lyons.
