Field Hockey Suffers 3-0 Loss to Keene State

Smith College at Keene State College
October 25, 2017
Keene, N.H.

Records: Smith 8-9; Keene State 11-8

Junior forward Erica Stauffer netted a hat trick for Keene State as the Smith College field hockey team suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Owls Wednesday evening in non-conference action. The win boosts the Owls record to 11-8, while the Pioneers dip to 8-9.

Senior goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made four saves for the Pioneers, while Rachel Loseby stopped 12 for the Owls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Two quickfire goals and some excellent saves boosted the Owls into an early lead. Stauffer put the Owls in front in the 15th minute, as Kelsey Roberts slid a pass across the circle to the Owls' junior captain, who beat the Pioneers' goalie Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) at the near post. Exactly three minutes later, the lead was doubled through the same combination of players. Roberts' pass found Stauffer at the top of the circle, and she made no mistake to make it 2-0.

Loseby made a double save to keep Smith off the board just before halftime, sprawling to stop Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, MD/Severna Park), then denying Jenna Tampon the the follow-up attempt. Loseby made another stop on Sammie Pavlov with three minutes left as the Owls went into the break up 2-0.

The Owls' freshman keeper made another stunning double save early in the second half, keeping out Pavlov and Chaudoin on back-to-back attempts. Taylor Robison had a defensive save on Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, CA/La Costa Canyon) in the 28th minute and another on Alex Larosee (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) three minutes later. Stauffer completed the hat-trick when she took a through pass from Brittany Johnson and scored in the 57th minute.

Loseby preserved the shutout with stops of Pavlov and Neva Richardson to close out the game.
