Field Hockey Locks Up No. 3 Seed with 3-1 Victory Over Clark

The Smith College field hockey team secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament with their 3-1 win over Clark University Saturday in the regular season finale. With the win, the Pioneers even their record at 9-9 and 5-3 in conference action, while the Cougars drop to 6-12 overall and 1-7 in the NEWMAC.

The two teams played a scoreless first half with Smith having five penalty corners compared to one for Clark. 

Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) put the Pioneers ahead at the 45:41 mark on an assist from Jenna Tampon (Oceanside, Calif./Vista). 

The Cougars responded just two minutes later as Cheyanne Zappala took a pass from Olivia Barksdale to tie the game at 1-1.

Alex Larosee (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School) sealed the win for Smith as the junior forward scored back-to-back goals for the Pioneers with under six minutes left in the contest. 

Smith senior keeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made five saves in the win, while Dani Michaud stopped 14 for the Cougars.


UP NEXT
Smith will host No. 6 seed Wellesley College Tuesday evening in the NEWMAC quarterfinals. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
