Field Hockey Powers Past Western New England, 5-0

The Smith College field hockey team scored a season high five goals en route to a 5-0 win over Western New England Thursday evening in non-conference action. The Pioneers even their record at 5-5, while the Golden Bears overall record now stands at 5-5.

The Pioneers wasted little time and took advantage of their first corner opportunity to get on the board 1-0 at the 9:46 mark. Sophomore Sammie Pavlov (Royersford, Pa./Westtown School)'s shot from the top of the circle blew right past the WNE keeper. Senior Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook)Ā doubled Smith's lead in the 17th minute on her unassisted tally. Sophomore Morgan Handwerger (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley)Ā and first-year Bryn Murray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) connected to put the Pioneers up 3-0 at 26:44.

Junior Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) was in the right place at the right time and collected the ball after sophomore Vivian Nelson (Alberta, Canada/Strathcona) went 1v1 with the WNE goalkeeper. Bogan put the Pioneers up 4-0 with her second goal of the season. Sophomore MaddieĀ Ryan notched her second tally of the season with under two minutes remaining in the game for the 5-0 final score.

Smith goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) earned the victory with two stops, while Golden Bear goalie Grace Trupe shouldered the loss with nine saves. Smith senior Molly Peek (South Orange, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy) appeared in game action for the first time this season, recording one save in 12:43.Ā

GOAL: SMI 1, WNE 0; 9:46 -Ā 
Pavlov scored on a direct shot on goal on a corner. Senior Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy)Ā inserted the ball to start the play and classmate Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) dished it off to Pavlov.Ā 
GOAL: SMI 2, WNE 0; 16:17 - LabriolaĀ took advantage of a turnover in the circle from the Golden Bear defense and reverse sweeped the loose ball into the back of the net.
GOAL: SMI 3, WNE 0; 26:44 - Sophomore Morgan Handwerger (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley)Ā notched her first career goal on first-year Bryn Murray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury)'s first career assist. Handwerger controlled the pass and reverse chipped it into the cage.
GOAL: SMI 4, WNE 0; 57:04 - A breakaway from Vivian Nelson (Alberta, Canada/Strathcona) resulted in BayleighĀ Bogan collecting the loose ball and placing it into the wide open goal for the 4-0 lead.
GOAL: SMI 5, WNE 0; 68:10 - Morgan Handwerger (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley)Ā dribbled the ball down the end line and passed to a wide open Maddie Ryan (Scituate, Mass./UMass Amherst) who was waiting in front of the cage and one-touched a point-blank shot past the keeper.

GAME NOTES
  • Smith owned a 22-3 advantage in shots, also earning an 11-1 margin in penalty corners.
  • Tietje is now tied for sixth in program history with 341 career saves.
  • The Pioneers now hold a 13-5 series advantage against WNE.
  • Smith has outscored the Golden Bears 28-4 over the last five meetings.
