Field Hockey Suffers 5-0 Setback to Springfield

Senior forward Maggie Kennedy scored two goals in the first-half as Springfield College claimed a road victory over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Saturday afternoon. The Pride improve to 7-5 overall and earn their first conference victory of the season, while Smith drops to 5-6, 2-2.

Kennedy put the Pride on the board in the 20th minute on an assist from Amanda Nusbaum and doubled Springfield's lead on an unassisted goal just four minutes later. Taylor Conley netted her third goal of the season at the 30:45 mark, giving the Pride a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

Ann Mahoney and Morgan BronkĀ rounded out the scoring for the Pride in the second-half.

Smith goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa)Ā made 13 saves, while EmmalieĀ Drake stopped seven shots in her second shutout of the season.Ā 

HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: SMI 0, SPRĀ 1; 19:53 -
Nusbaum's shot from the top of the circle was tipped in on the right side from Kennedy.
GOAL: SMI 0, SPRĀ 2; 23:35 - Belle CopponiĀ moved the ball down the right side of the field and sent a pass to Kennedy in the circle. After Kennedy's initial shot and save by the Smith goalkeeper, Kennedy smacked the rebound to the back of the cage.
GOAL: SMI 0, SPR 3; 30:45 - Springfield's offensive corner unit moved the ball around the top of the circle and sent a shot into Taylor Conley who controlled the ball and found the back of the net.
GOAL: SMI 0, SPRĀ 4; 44:20 - Tirzah McMillan challenged Tietje who came out to the stroke mark to make the initial save on McMillan's shot. Mahoney sprinted to the loose ball and placed it into the wide open cage for the 4-0 lead.
GOAL: SMI 0, SPRĀ 5; 55:32 - BronkĀ was placed on the left post of the cage and corralled the ball before beating the Smith goalkeeper for the final goal of the game.

GAME NOTES
  • Springfield owned a 19-11 advantage in shots, while each team took nine corners in the contest.
  • Tietje moves to sixth all-time in program history with 354 career saves.
  • The Pride now hold a 29-3-1 series lead over the Pioneers.
