The Smith College volleyball team put forth a valiant effort, but ultimately fell to Clark University Friday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Ainsworth Gymnasium. With the win, the Cougars improve to an overall record of 11-7 and 4-3 in the NEWMAC, while the Pioneers fall to 7-11 overall and 0-7 in the conference.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- First-year Amy Hagen (Owings, Md./Northern) produced a double-double of 11 kills, 12 digs and added a team-high three service aces.
- Sophomore setter Kimani Freeman (Newark, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy) recorded a career-high 29 assists and totaled 11 digs.
- First-year Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, Tex./St. Dominic Savio Catholic) hit .467 for the match with eight kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
The Pioneers jumped out to a 6-3 lead on a kill from
Amy Hagen (Owings, Md./Northern), but Clark responded right away with a 7-0 run to go up 10-6. Another 5-0 run midway through the set propelled them to the 25-20 set 1 victory.
SET 2
Neither team was able to gain a comfortable edge until a 5-0 spurt from the Cougars put the visitors up 10-6. Back-to-back kills from
Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, Tex./St. Dominic Savio Catholic) and
Elizabeth Peay (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) and a service ace from
Kimani Freeman (Newark, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy) tied the set at 11-11. Clark went up 17-12 but the Pioneers continued to pressure and was able to claw back to make it a two point game at 24-22 before Ramos' kills ended the match.
SET 3
The final set was tightly contested and featured seven ties before a kill from Kendra Campbell jump started a 3-0 run to put the Cougars up 16-13. A six point lead from Clark dwindles down to a 24-21 advantage thanks to strong defense from the Pioneers front line. Marina Ramos closed out the match with one of her game-high 16 kills.
