Strong Second-Half Leads Wheaton Past Smith Soccer

The Smith College soccer team received a first-half goal from Kelly McKenna (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) but it was not enough as Wheaton College bested the Pioneers, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon. The Lyons improve to 9-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the NEWMAC, while Smith drops to 5-6-0 and 1-4-0 in conference play.

McKenna got the action started for the Pioneers in the 22nd minute to put the visitors up 1-0. It took over 45 minutes of play until Aymara O'Brien-Pappalardo's netted evened the game at 1-1. Just under three minutes later, Caren McCarthy netted the game-winner in the 70th minute.

Smith goalkeeper Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) made 10 saves in the loss, while Alexa Barbagallo also stopped 10.

Smith gained a 1-0 lead to start the game when Kelly McKenna (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) used a rebound from a save in the 22nd minute. 
GOAL: SMI 1, WHE 1; 67:03 - The Lyons evened the score when Aymara O'Brien-Pappalardo headed in a ball from Hannah Lepordo on the right side. 
GOAL: SMI 1, WHE 2; 69:54 - Just 2:51 later, Caren McCarthy booted the game-winner from way outside the box. 

GAME NOTES
  • Wheaton held the 20-14 advantage in shots and 5-2 edge in corners.
  • The Lyons have now won all nine meetings against the Pioneers.
  • McKenna's goal was the second goal of her career.
