Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) posted season-high numbers in points and rebounds to propel the Smith College basketball team to an 84-70 win over Westfield State University Wednesday evening at Ainsworth Gymnasium. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 7-2 while the Owls drop to 5-4.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Guest-Pritchett led the way with 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting and hauled in 21 rebounds.
- Senior forward Samantha Alakai (Pukalani, Hawaii/Punahou School) shot 7-of-8 from the field for 15 points to go along with five boards, two blocks, and two steals.
- Junior guard Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) added 12 points and a game-high eight assists.
- Seniors Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) and Amanda Barriscale (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) each totaled nine points.
WESTFIELD STATE HIGHLIGHTS
- Lucy Barrett scored a team-high 16 points for the Owls.
- Alyssa Darling hit three from beyond-the-arc to finish with 11 points.
- Rebecca Sapouckey contributed seven points, three assists, and two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls jumped out to a 17-8 lead on 4-for-4 shooting from beyond-the-arc in the opening 4:04 of the game. Guest-Pritchett and Barret exchanged layups as the Pioneers would find themselves down 22-12 with 2:57 left in the opening quarter. Over the final 2:39, Smith used an 8-0 run to close the gap to 22-20 at the end of the first period.
The Pioneers outscored the visitors 44-22 in the second and third quarters to take a 64-44 lead heading into the final stanza.
A 10-2 run from Westfield midway through the fourth brought the Owls to within 11 (72-61) at the 5:18 mark. Back-to-back layups from Sapouckey made the score 73-67 in favor of Smith but
Katy McClellan (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) would hit two free-throws to extend the lead to eight with 3:23 on the clock. The Owls would again to pull within six but the Pioneers converted free-throws down the stretch to secure the 84-70 win.
