Basketball Takes Down Springfield, 64-51

Four student-athlete scored in double-figures to power Smith College to a 64-51 upset win over Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) basketball action Wednesday evening at Ainsworth Gymnasium.


SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore forward Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) led the way with 15 points and 11 boards for her ninth double-double of the season.
  • Junior Samantha Alakai (Pukalani, Hawaii/Punahou School) registered 10 points to go along with a team-best 12 rebounds. 
  • Sophomore forward Erin Hanley (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) shot 4-of-6 from the field to finish with 12 points, two rebounds and two steals.
  • Senior guard Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway) finished with 13 points, four rebounds, and two steals.


SPRINGFIELD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Leading the Pride was senior center Ava Adamopoulos' 15 points and 12 boards for her sixth double-double of the year.
  • Freshman guard Alex Goslin netted 11 points to go along with three rebounds, two steals and one assist.
  • Senior guard Lexi Windwer notched 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers in 34 minutes of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A lay-up from Castro gave the Pioneers an 8-2 advantage over the first 5:13 of play before a 5-0 spurt from the Pride pulled the visitor within one with 3:08 left to play in the quarter. A pair of lay-ups from Gosline gave Springfield an 11-10 lead at the end of the frame.

Trailing 17-13 3:56 into the second quarter, Smith got buckets from Hanley and Guest-Pritchett to tie the game at 17 apiece before Springfield gained a five point advantage on a triple from Windwer. The Pioneers closed the half on a baskets from junior guard Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) and sophomore guard Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) to go into the break down 22-21.

Smith came out hot in the third quarter, opening on an 11-2 run to take a 32-24 lead over the Pride. Castro's three-pointer with 41 seconds left in period widened the game to 13 points (46-33) before Adamapoulos' jumper in the closing seconds of the third.

The Pride opened the fourth on a triple from Chelsea McAllister to come within eight and free throws from Windwer trimmed the lead to 48-47 with 3:11 on the clock but the Pioneers pulled away late to secure the 13-point victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
For the game, Smith shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the field and forced 16 Springfield turnovers. The Pride owned a 44-39 advantage on the glass.

Smith continues NEWMAC play on Saturday when the Pioneers travel to MIT for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
