Twelve different players scored as the Smith College basketball team earned a 67-42 win over Wellesley College Wednesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Ainsworth Gymnasium. Smith has now won six straight over the Blue and leads the all-time series 40-27.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore forward Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) led all scorers with 12 points to go along with seven rebounds.
- Sophomore guard Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) had a productive night off the bench, adding 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, with two rebounds and two steals.
- Senior guard Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway) and junior forward Samantha Alakai (Pukalani, Hawaii/Punahou School) each finished with six points and seven boards.
- Sophomore guard Katy McClellan (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) totaled a season-high seven points.
WELLESLEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Ailis Hanley and Lauren Dines each totaled nine points for the Blue.
- Zojajha Ayub grabbed a team-high four rebounds while Kayla Jang finished with eight points off the bench.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams got off to a slow start as Smith and Wellesley combined for eight turnovers in the opening 2:33 of the game.
- Jumpers from McClellan and Nikkiah Snoddy (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) gave the Pioneers a 9-3 lead at the 2:05 mark as Smith would go on for a 13-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
- A three-pointer from Bondi ran the score to 18-7, but the Blue would find themselves in a 15 point hole on another Bondi trey with 3:12 left in the half.
- Two Wellesley baskets from Hanley and You Mak in the closing minutes resulted in a 32-21 halftime score.
- An 11-0 run to start the third stanza powered the Pioneers to a 21-point advantage (47-26) going into the fourth.
- Smith's largest lead of the game came at the 5:03 mark as Stephanie Foukaris (Nicosia, Cyprus/Pascal English School Nicosia) drained both free throws to make the score 60-32.
- The Pioneers would maintain their lead down the stretch and go on for the 67-42 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Pioneers knocked down 40.0 percent (6-15) of their attempts from beyond the arc to finish 46.8 percent from the field and 73.9 percent from the free throw line. Smith also held the advantage on the glass, 45-22.

The Pioneers will play their final home game of the regular season when the Lyons of Wheaton College come to Ainsworth for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off. Smith will honor their seniors prior to the game.
