Senior outfielder
Ally Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) collected the 100th hit of her career on opening day of the 2017 season for the Smith College softball team. The Pioneers began the day with a 7-5 loss to Oneonta and dropped the second game to Husson, 6-1.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) went 5-for-7 in the two games, recording two RBI against Oneonta.
- Snyder added three hits including a triple against the Red Dragons.
- Senior pitcher Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) went 5.1 innings while allowing nine hits and seven runs in game one.
- First years Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) and Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) each recorded their first career hit.
- Junior pitcher Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) tossed 6.0 innings with four strikeouts and two walks in the loss to Husson. She was a force behind the place as she scored the only run for the Pioneers with a sixth inning homerun.
Game 1
Smith plated a run in the top of the first inning to get things started as Snyder's triple scored Blokker.Â
Oneonta scored its eventual winning runs in the home half of the sixth when they plated three runs. The Red Dragons loaded the bases with one out and scored its first run on a bases loaded walk followed by a double by DelGenio to drive in two more runs.
Smith added three runs in the fourth as sophomore
Lydia DeAngelo (Portsmouth, R.I./Moses Brown) doubled to kick-off the inning. Townsend's single scored DeAngelo senior
Sarah Tully (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) touched home plate on Blokker's single.Â
However, the Red Dragons would add three runs of their own in the fifth and sixth innings.
Game 2
Husson started scoring early on in the game with a quick two run homer by Arike Brochu. The Eagles tagged on four runs in innings five through seven.Â
The Pioneers had a golden opportunity in the seventh with the bases loaded but Smith was unable to capitalize and settled for the 6-1 loss.
