The Smith College tennis team opened their spring competition season with a 6-3 win over Simmons College Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers got off to a good start in doubles, winning in both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
Noa Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) paired up with their opposite styles of play complimenting each other perfectly. Smith with her consistent baseline play was able to set up her partner for many put aways at the net, allowing them to cruise to an 8-2 victory. In the No. 2 position, the first year duo of
Kara Van Allen (Kalamazoo, Mich./Mattawan) and
Emma Essenmacher (Delran, N.J./Delran) impressed everyone with their aggressive play up at net also giving them an 8-4 victory.

Dubin led the charge at the No. 1 singles position. She played stellar offensive singles to win 6-0 6-0
in 35 minutes against Nickie Ngyuen.
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) finished next with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Marissa Johnson at the No. 2 slot. No. 4
Christine Yee (South San Francisco, Calif./South San Francisco) gave Smith the fourth and winning point over Paola Rios, 6-0, 6-2.
Morgan Barney (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) brought in Smith's 6th win at 3 singles. Her persistent consistent style was all that was needed to bring down Olivia Lakes 6-3, 6-1.
