The Smith College lacrosse team pulled away late in the second half for a 12-6 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win over Coast Guard on Saturday game. Prior to the game, the Pioneers honored their lone senior
Quinn Lavigne (Portland, Maine/Portland). Smith is now one win away from tying the program record for wins in a season (10).
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Emily Biggs (Florence, Mass./Northampton) came off the bench to score a season-high four goals.
- Sophomore Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) netted three to go along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- First year Bella Ferraro (Orange, Conn./Amity) scored one and led the Pioneers with four draw controls.
- Goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) made five saves and is just one win away from tying the program record for wins in a season (10).
COAST GUARD HIGHLIGHTS
- For the Bears, Daria McKenna finished with four goals and two draw controls.
- Abigail Bradford and Carter Sanderson rounded out the scoring for Coast Guard.
- Stephanie Bullard led the defensive effort with five caused turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
McKenna gave the Bears the early lead firing home a free position shot just 1:40 into the game for the 1-0 advantage. The Pioneers responded under a minute later as Ferro found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 and Harris scored back-to-back goals, giving Smith a 3-1 lead with 22:35 on the clock. Another tally from McKenna was answered by goals from Clelie Fielding (Francestown, N.H./High Mowing School) and Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy ) giving Smith a 5-2 edge going into halftime.
The second half started like the first with a goal from McKenna followed by two goals for the Pioneers from Biggs. McKenna would then score another goal followed by a tally from Sanderson with 16:30 left in the game making the score 7-5.
Smith however closed out the game on another 5-1 run holding on for the 12-6 win.
