Snyder's Grand Slam Not Enough in NEWMAC DH Loss to No. 20 Springfield

Senior Ally Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) hit a grand slam and drove in six runs but it was not enough as the Smith College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to No. 20 Springfield College Sunday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference NEWMAC) action Sunday afternoon. With the dinger, Snyder extended her own career home run record to 17.

GAME 1: SMITH 1 SPRINGFIELD 5

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) took the loss for the Pioneers in the complete game effort, giving up five runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts.
  • First year Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) went 2-for-3 while Snyder drove in Smith's only run.

SPRINGFIELD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior pitcher Talia Loda went the full seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out five to improve to 11-1 on the season.
  • Offensively, Wheeler paced the Pride with three RBI, including a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning, while Carianna Gasdia went 3-for-4 with a stolen base.

The teams played two scoreless innings before the Pride tagged Burchat for two runs in the top of the third when Kirsten Drobiak's sac fly scored Rachel Bell. Loda scored on Wheeler's single for the second run of the inning.

The Pride added a run in the top of the sixth before Smith got on the board when Snyder's single scored Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard), making it a 3-1 Springfield lead. Wheeler's two run homer in the seventh sealed the win for the visitors.


GAME 2: SMITH 8 SPRINGFIELD 10

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) pitched a complete game, giving up 10 runs on 15 hits.
  • Snyder collected three hits with five RBI to power the Pioneer offense.
  • Emma Kraus (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield/Dupon-Kraus Homeschool), Townsend, and Blokker each finished with two hits.

SPRINGFIELD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Shelby Allen earned her fifth win of the season, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up two earned runs, while Nicole Cring got the start, and pitched 3.0 innings, giving up four earned runs while striking out a pair.
  • Gabby Alfieri hit her first career homerun and followed it with another homer later in the game to finish with three RBI.
  • Eight student-athletes picked up an RBI in the second game.

Springfield wasted little time as Wheeler's single to center scored Carianna Gasdia to go up 1-0. Smith responded in their half of the first when Kraus touched home on Snyder's single to center.

The Pride exploded for five runs in the second and third innings to take a 6-1 advantage.

The Pioneers got the bats going in the third as Snyder crushed a grand slam to center, bringing her team within one run at 6-5. Smith tacked on three more runs in the fourth to take their first lead of the series at 8-6.

The Pride rallied with three runs in the top of the fifth, including RBI doubles from Conley and Ball, followed by an RBI single from Loda which scored Ball to make it 9-8 and added an insurance run in the six to seal the win.

Smith heads to No. 19 MIT tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. for doubleheader against the Engineers.
