Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Labriola's Game-Winner Propels Field Hockey to 1-0 Victory Over Plymouth St.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Senior forward Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook) scored in the 42nd minute to power the Smith College field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.

After a scoreless first half, senior Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) found Labriola for the lone goal of the game. Senior goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) came up big with a number of saves on breakaway opportunities for the Panthers.

The Pioneers had a chance to go up 2-0 on a corner at the 68:50 mark, but Sammie Pavlov (Royersford, Pa./Westtown School)'s aerial shot went wide of the cage.

With less than 40 seconds left in regulation, Lily Davis streaked down the left side looking to tie the game, but Tietje's slide tackle iced the win for the pioneers.

Tietje (1-0) recorded nine saves in her 41st career start. Alivia Bates made 11 saves in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: SMI 1, PSU 0; 41:01: Hamilton gathered a rebound from the PSU keeper and fed it to Labriola for the goal.

COACH'S QUOTE
Head Coach Jaime Ginsberg
"Cameo is a great goalie with great footwork and makes the right decisions. It's great having Cameo back there and adds confidence to the lines ahead of Tietje. My thought is always Cameo's going to get it but what's going to happen next, not the opposite of that."

GAME NOTES
  • Smith outshot the Panthers (16-9) and held a (5-3) advantage in corners.
  • First year Bryn Murray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) made her first career start in today's game.
