NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College field hockey team suffered their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Caryl Newhof Classic. SUNY Cortland topped the Pioneers 3-1 on a soaked Smith Turf Field.
Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) notched her first goal of the season at the 10:57 mark to put the Pioneers on top 1-0. Cortland tied the game 22:33 into the first on Jessica Welsh's unassisted goal, and grabbed the lead at the 23:50 mark on Liz Athing's tally.
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made a season-high 13 saves while Cortland's goalkeeper Kailynne Reinhoel stopped three shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: SMI 1, CORT. 0; 10:57: The Pioneers were the first to get on the board as 
Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon)'s shot soared over the Cortland goalkeeper.
GOAL: SMI 1, CORT. 1; 22:33: The Red Dragons tied the game when Jessica Welsh fired a shot from the top of the circle to the low post.
GOAL: SMI 1, CORT. 2; 23:50: Anna Branch crossed the ball to Liz Athing who one-touched it past Tietje for the lead.
GOAL: SMI 1, CORT. 3; 70:00: With time expired on the clock, Jess Gibaldi controlled the ball in a crowd of players after an initial save from Tietje.
GAME NOTES
	- Cortland outshot Smith by a 22-5 margin and held a 12-7 advantage in penalty corners. 
 
	- This was the first meeting between these two programs.
 
	- Seniors Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and Sophie Chase (Milton, Mass./Milton) were named to the Blei All-Tournament Team named after former Smith field hockey coach Jackie Blei.
