The Smith College field hockey team rolled to a 3-0 victory in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday afternoon. Senior midfielder
Sophie Chase (Milton, Mass./Milton) contributed a goal and an assist. With the win, the Pioneers move to 2-3 on the season, while the Lyons fall to 3-2.
Both defenses stood out in the opening half as
Neva Richardson (Rehoboth Beach, Del./St. Andrews School)'s shot was stopped by the stick of Wheaton's Merril Nadeau to preserve the scoreless game. Wheaton's best opportunity came on a corner attempt in the 18th minute when Katie Peters' aerial shot was headed into the cage until
Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) came out of nowhere to swat the ball out of the air.Â
The Pioneers got on the board first when
Sophie Chase (Milton, Mass./Milton) tallied her first goal of the year at the 26:39 mark.
Sophomore
Maddie Ryan (Scituate, Mass./UMass Amherst) doubled Smith's lead in the 63rd minute for her first career goal on junior Maddeline Hubbard's first career assist.
Senior captain
Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook)Â put the exclamation point on the win with her goal just over a minute later.
Smith goalkeeper
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa)Â made 10 saves in the win while Wheaton's Riley Thompson stopped 17 in the loss.
