The Smith College field hockey team suffered their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) loss of the season at the hands of No. 14 MIT Saturday afternoon. The Engineers topped the Pioneers 1-0 on a second-half goal from Bailey Tregoning.
Both teams played to a 0-0 first half with Smith holding a 3-0 advantage on corners. The Pioneers opened the second stanza with four shots on goal and a corner in the first five minutes of the game.
The Engineers would then get their chance as Tregoning netted the game-winner and her seventh goal of the season at the 45:00-minute mark.
MIT nearly went up 2-0 but a defensive save from
Sammie Pavlov (Royersford, Pa./Westtown School) preserved the 1-0 score.
The Pioneers continued to pressure the Engineers in the final minute of the game but the MIT defense was able to withstand any last effort to go on for the win.
Smith goalkeeper
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made seven saves as did reigning NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Week Grace Moore.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: SMI 0, MIT 1; 45:00 - A cross from Taylor Grey got through the legs of the Smith goalkeeper and multiple Smith defenders until Tregoning controlled the ball and pounded it to the back of the cage.
