Field Hockey Rolls Past Springfield, 5-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior Anna Ballou (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) finished with two goals and an assist as the Smith College field hockey team bested Springfield College, 5-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Friday evening at Stagg Field. With the win, Smith improves to 7-4 on the season including 3-1 in conference play while the Pride fall to 7-4 and 2-2 in the conference.

HOW THEY SCORED

19:37 - SMITH - The Pioneers struck for the game's first goal when senior Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) knocked home a rebounded shot. 

31:30 - SMITH - The visitors doubled their advantage after junior Anna Ballou (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) tapped in a pass from classmate Neva Richardson (Rehoboth Beach, Del./St. Andrews School).

34:59 - SMITH - Richardson sent a pass from the right side the of the cage to an open Sammie Pavlov (Royersford, Pa./Westtown School) who was waiting at the top of the circle unguarded. Pavlov beat the goalkeeper and the clock with a hard shot that sneaked in the lower left corner of the cage.

49:06 - SMITH - Ballou had a clean breakaway from the Springfield defense and managed to find the back of the net as she was brought down to the ground.

69:35 - SMITH - Sophomore Bryn Murray's (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) fancy stickwork beat the defender as she was able to tuck in a shot under the Springfield goalkeeper.

NOTABLE
  • Ballou's two tallies were her fourth of the season and her assist brings her season total to three.
  • Pavlov netter her team-leading eighth goal of the year, while Handwerger has been a spark off the bench with six goals in 2018.
  • Junior Neva Richardson (Rehoboth Beach, Del./St. Andrews School) collects two assists in a game for the first time in her career.
  • First year goalkeeper Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) earned her second shutout of the year, finishing with two saves.
  • Smith held advantages in shots (19-5) and corners (6-5).
  • The Pioneers improve to 4-28-1 against the Pride and have won three of the last four meetings.
